Get Gorgeous with Gel and Stay That Way With These 3 Healthy Hand Tips
Gel nails are wonderful. Brands like OPI and Creative Nail Design offer gel nail polish in a variety of colors including shatter, shimmer and 3-D polishes. The polish can last anywhere from 12-20 days without chipping and it has a beautiful natural, mirror finish. However, like every good thing, there’s always a catch. The use of UV light rays through the use of a 9, 24, or 36 watt UV Light Lamp is necessary in every gel-curing nail service. Excessive exposure to UV light rays can result in the damage of the immune system and skin cells, leading to the discoloration of the skin and even skin cancer. Yes, the risk is alarming but not to worry, here are 3 ways to protect yourself from the potentially harmful process associated with Gel Nail Services.
1. Wear Cotton Gloves- After washing your hands, following your manicure, cut the tips of the cloth gloves and put them on. The cloth will protect your skin from the rays.
2. Wear Sunscreen!- Yes, I know it sounds weird to apply sunscreen to your hands in a nail salon, but wearing a sunscreen with SPF of at least 15, (the more SPF the better; SPF 50 is perfect!) will provide phenomenal protection. Apply the sunscreen to your skin just before the gel polishing of course.
3. Limit gel exposure- Gel Nail Services usually provide a nail style that looks great for at least 14 days, so limit your UV light exposure to 2 sessions per month. Think about it, 2, 25 minute gel nail services per month for 1 year is 10 hours of direct, up close and personal exposure to UV Light rays; without protection, 10 years of such practices could yield serious consequences.
